A posthumous Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers box set is set for release on September 28, SiriusXM announced Tuesday. The four-CD collection was compiled by Petty’s daughter Adria, wife Dana and and former collaborators including Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell.
TItled An American Treasure, the set features 60 tracks including previously unreleased studio and live recordings, deep cuts and alternate versions.
Although SiriusXM broke the news Tuesday, a countdown clock at tompetty.com appears to be counting down to 10am ET today and will likely reveal further details as well as visuals. The official Tom Petty and the Heartbeakers Facebook page has been posting teasers for the last 24 hours.
Tom Petty died suddenly on October 2, 2017 at the age of 66. He had just wrapped up a 40th anniversary tour at the time. A statement later confirmed that he died of an “accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications” for pain.
Petty sold more than 80 million records worldwide over the course of his career with the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys and as a solo artist. In 2002 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
